Vietnamese Sandwiches

September 14, 2008

They are really delicious. Healthy, rich in colors and full of flavors. They taste best if the baguette is yummy and crispy. The bread crumb should not be too much otherwise in no time you would lie down on the floor and somebody would practice on you the clear emergency instructions of a choking poster.

Never keep your money in your pocket if you encounter a VN sandwich vendor. Give yourself a treat. Spend. Quite affordable ($3 to $4 each depending on the stuffing) Vietnamese sandwiches are definitely worth a try. If you are on a low fat diet, don’t forget to say : “No mayonnaise for me please. Or just a little bit.”

Anytime I am in a Chinatown of the world, I can’t help it, I have to look for a Vietnamese sandwich stand. The green leaves in the video are cilantro (persil chinois-Korianderblätter)

In Paris 13 – Chinatown (France)

You are in New York right now? There are many Vietnamese sandwich stands in New York City’s Chinatown. But try these insider tips :

- A Chau Deli, 82A Mulberry Street – Phone 212.766.332 (9am-7pm)
It is a very small place. They’ve got only two seats for soup eaters. If you are the third one, you will enjoy your soup… in the standing position. But don’t breathe too much freely otherwise you would throw the customer who is queueing behind you to the two other soup eaters seated just behind him. No queue in the shop is longer than 4 persons. On beautiful days, no problem to wait outside.

- The name of this sandwich stand has slipped my mind again. Name, address and phone number coming soon.
My second favorite sandwich place because it is farther located from Columbus Park than the first one. The neighbor next door : a Firefighter Station. So if you enjoy eating your Vietnamese sandwich seated in front of the shop, your back against the window pane, admiring the street life, some time or other, you will see how red firefighter engines come and go. The shopkeepers are nice people. Please, be patient at lunch time, because their sandwiches are in great demand.

- Paris Sandwich, 113 Mott Street, Phone 212.227.7221.
A pleasant lively well-organized place. Enough tables and seats for patrons. Always crowdy. Great sandwich stuffing variety. There is an oven in the shop (what is rather seldom) so the baguettes are always golden fresh and warm. One minus though : I don’t like the crispyness of the baguettes. I cannot explain why. Just give a try.

In Saigon/HoChiMinh – Ben Thanh Market (Vietnam)

Forget about buying Vietnamese sandwiches from restaurants. Since they make money selling mostly food dishes, you’d be very very fortunate if you get fresh bread there. Most of the times, their sandwiches are AWFUL. If you are a gambler at heart, go for it and please let me know about your experience.

I am a severe case of Vietnamese sandwich addiction.

Beurre, Sugar and Gym

August 27, 2008

JoggerWhere are Beurre and Sugar?

The More Magic Noodles

August 24, 2008

You have surely already heard of the fancy ramen, also known as instant noodles. They are offered in a variety of tastes and colors in Asian shops where heaps of packs of ramen reach to the sky. They are very convenient. I always have some packs of ramen handy at home. Using ramen, it is possible to cook very simple to sophisticated dishes.

It takes only 5 min to cook the simplest meal ever. Just boil enough water for a soup bowl. Put your ramen into the bowl. Cover for 2 min. And that’s it. The tricky thing would be to eat your soup … Asian style : with chopsticks! Can you do that?

Ramen

A Yummy Ramen Soup

A Japanese has invented ramen, the magic noodle. While enjoying their ramen soups, a team of North Korean scientists took the time to invent the next generation of noodles : The More Magic Noodles. The scientists praise their soybean noodle as the noodle which delays feelings of hunger. It sounds very promising for millions of people in the world. People who are fighting with too much food intake issues, people who are starving although they live in rich countries, people who are starving because they happen to be born in poor countries, people who are undergoing natural or man-made catastrophies.

Should the special soybean noodles really be what it is said that they are, the world would hit very big. I am eager to test out the More Magic Noodles. Taking a nap instead of having food makes Beauty Sleep happy.

Maybe Easy For You

April 8, 2008

Try this one. Don’t give up. You are allowed to push the ‘START’ button as often as needed.

You will feel good if you reach the FINISH line all by yourself. Ignore the ANSWER button. I know, it’s quite tempting to click on it. I had to fight hard against my cursor always going the wrong way : ‘No, not yet. Give me 2 more tiny minutes. Pleaaaase !’

A Word Game

Yesterday, I cooked some good food for a good friend of mine : Ken from Wisconsin. Pork Chinese Style, Basmati Rice, French Salad. Salad was a magic mix of : iceberg lettuce, very thin sliced carrot, fennel, sour sweet juicy apple, fresh tarragon leaves, finely chopped shallots, oil, apple vinegar, French mustard, salt and pepper. Ken, who told me, pork is not the kind of meat he likes to eat, you should have seen how he enjoyed the food ! Aperitif was ‘Pineau des Charentes’.

The pork dish was a real dream… and maybe my best-kept secret. All I know is all non-pork eaters had been charmed by this pork dish. It’s my secret weapon.

A couple of years ago, I felt like cooking for a girlfriend of mine. It was a masterpiece of a duck. Approx. 7.7 lbs (3,5 kg). The marinade was the same as the one used for Ken’s pork. My girlfriend and I, we started to eat rice to the duck. But then, we forgot completely about the green salad, the cucumber and the rice. We could not stop eating the duck and munching on its bones !!! Wonderful ! Just wonderful ! For dessert, a thunder of laughters at seeing the heap of bones on our plates, the rice bowl and the salad bowl, both still full. Good for us that our fitness awareness does not go on vacation everyday !

Ken has spent most of his life in Germany. Like I said, he is a good friend of mine. If your German language skills are fair to excellent, please enter Ken’s World. If you need a dictionary, go to the sidebar right hand side of page, there is one on the shelf waiting to be taken out for a stroll.
